I am using helical insight version 5.0 GA. For certain cases I am using custom column, but by default a custom column is always identified as a dimension (blue), is there a method to change it to measure because in many cases we need it as a measure and use it in visualization

This is already noted as an enhancement and we would be working on this in subsequent releases. There is a workaround which can be used (might work in some cases) is:
Add aggregate function on that custom column, then you can switch to continuous. This way it will work like measure. Alternatively, you can add None aggregate function in sqluery.properties, then that will start appearing in aggregate function dropdown list and then change it to continuous measure.
